Communication should not be released bit’s and piece at a time!
The way we communicate and gather information is ever-changing and evolving, and not for the better. Back in the day, you would write someone a letter or if it was to be casual , maybe a note. This took time a thought and was received in the same manner it was written. It bared importance and was often saved and reread. If there was an event you would make or get a flyer. Then came emails, which made transportation instantaneous. Very convenient but often sent in haste. Now we have group chats, tweets, and texting.
I must say texting and tweets is not a great way to communicate information. Hell, our current President is a perfect example of that. But group text is the form of communication my daughters debate team has chosen to inform parents of upcoming events and information. We receive little bits of information at a time which often is incomplete and confusing. Then you receive all the responses from other members of the chat group. The first time they used it I got 26 texts in an hour and never did understand what information was trying to be relayed.
Now my daughter claims I am just out of touch and it’s only “my generation” that feels this way. I beg to differ girl. If there is an upcoming event I want a flyer and at the very least an email- not a text! I want to know when, where, what, how long, etc. and I want it on a single sheet I can print and forward, not in a string of texts limited to 60 characters and unprintable. Information cannot be relayed effectively in a series of texts. You may receive it instantaneous, but you will not get all the information required and it lacks importance.
How information should be communicated is by email, so it can be delivered quickly, and formatted with all the information clearly written or an attached flyer or document. Use the texts for last-minute changes and updates. If you have a major fundraiser I want a flyer so I can pass the information on to potential donors not a string of texts sent over several days.
I am not totally against texting and use it frequently myself. It is convenient and is useful for details as they arise, but not to replace a flyer or document generated with thought and care, and with all the information needed to be relayed. You cant text a schedule of upcoming events and I am still beside myself they tried. Talk about a shit show!
I don’t want a sound bite, I want the news!
